    Sad-baby

    Keep In Mind

    • While it’s great that the car seat cover is removable, unfortunately, it is neither machine washable or dryer friendly, this means it is suitable for hand wash only.
    • Some parents found they had difficulties in tightening the harness as well as the seat belt continuously becoming stuck.
    • The Britax Frontier weighs a hefty 24.9 pounds, which appears to be a common trend with Britax booster car seats. Due to its weight, this booster may not be a good choice for those families who plan on transferring it between vehicles. We recommend this as an install and leave type of car seat.
    • Compared to a lot of the other booster car seats on this list, the Britax Frontier definitely has a higher price tag so it may not be an ideal choice for those families on a budget.

    Our Verdict & Customer Opinions

Overall, the Britax Frontier ClickTight Harness-2-Booster Car Seat is a great choice for a number of reasons, particularly when you look at the quality and safety it offers. However, if you’re a family on a budget or looking for a lightweight booster seat you can easily transfer between vehicles, the Britax Frontier may not be ideal for you.

    Sad-baby

    Keep In Mind

    • At 26.5 pounds, the Britax Pinnacle is not exactly lightweight, in fact, it is one of the heaviest booster car seat models on the market. This means it is not a great choice if you plan on regularly transferring it between vehicles.
    • The Britax Pinnacle is also rather wide, which can cause some issues if you plan on installing it next to other car seats. As a general rule, this booster car seat is not ideal for 3-across car seat configurations, particularly in smaller or more compact vehicles. However, we recommend comparing measurements to see if the Britax Pinnacle will work for you and your family.
    • It is important to note that if your child is tall for their age it is possible that they could exceed the height limit prior to reaching the weight limit. To ensure the booster is still safe for use, be sure to keep an eye on this.

    Our Verdict & Customer Opinions

Overall, the Britax Pinnacle ClickTight G1.1 Harness-2-Booster Car Seat is a fantastic car seat for both children and parents. However, due to its weight and width, the Britax Pinnacle is best used as an install and leave type of booster.

    • The Chicco KidFit is not as aesthetically pleasing as other Chicco car seat models.
    • Vehicles with difficult to remove or non-removable headrests may prevent a secure fit and installation.
    • While lightweight, this booster car seat is relatively wide and may not fit well alongside other car seats and is not ideal for 3-across car seat configurations.
    • The Chicco KidFit is made in China, which can increase the chances of poor quality control.
    • Parents found that when the booster car seat is not in use in the high back mode it tends to rattle, we recommend securing it with the seatbelt.
    • Some parents found that the seat belt was prone to slipping out of the belt guide so be sure to check it is securely fitted before each ride.

    Our Verdict & Customer Opinions

The Chicco KidFit 2-in-1 Belt-Positioning Booster Car Seat is an impressive booster car seat that receives a lot of praise and very few major complaints from parents and families. Parents have reported this booster car seat to be a great choice if your child is transitioning from a harnessed seat to a booster seat due to making the transition both easy and seamless.

    Graco Tranzitions 3-in-1

    4.7/5
    4.7/5

The Graco Tranzitions 3-in-1 Harness Booster Convertible Car Seat is packed full of handy features that not only ensure your child has a safe and secure ride each and every time but features that also prioritize comfort, ease of use, and convenience. The Graco Tranzitions is also very reasonably priced and provides value for money.

Unlike a lot of other booster car seats on this list, the Graco Tranzitions is a 3-in-1 car seat that provides you with years of usage and grows with your child.

It converts from a forward-facing harnessed seat (22-65 pounds) to a highback booster (30-100 pounds) and then once its time, a backless booster (40-100 pounds). This booster car seat is available in 3 different color choices, including ‘Kyte’, ‘Basin’, and ‘Proof’.

    Happy-baby

    Why We Love It

    • Features Graco’s exclusive no-rethread Simply Safe Adjust Harness System, which enables you to adjust the height of the harness and headrest in a single motion and there is no rethreading required!
    • Rated as a ‘Best Bet’ Booster by the IIHS for providing a good belt fit.
    • To keep your growing child comfortable, the Graco Tranzitions includes an 8-position adjustable headrest.
    • Rigorously engineered and crash tested to meet or exceed US Federal Safety Standards and it has also been side impact tested for occupant retention solely with the built-in 5-point harness system.
    • A 7-year expiration date from the date of manufacture and a 1-year warranty.
    • The Graco Tranzitions weighs approximately 15 pounds, meaning it is relatively lightweight and a good choice for families on the go who plan to regularly transfer the car seat between vehicles.
    • Fitted with open-loop belt guides to ensure a properly secured seat belt.
    • Removable dual cup holders.
    • Conveniently designed with a machine-washable seat pad, harness and buckle covers and body insert for easy cleaning.
    Sad-baby

    Keep In Mind

    • Parents found the LATCH system difficult to attach to anchors found in some vehicles due to the hook-type LATCH connectors rather than the easier, push-on connectors found in other car seats.
    • Some parents had difficulty following the owner’s manual when it came to installation and everyday use. We recommend seeking out videos to watch when installing your Graco Tranzitions or contacting Graco directly for advice.
    • It is important to note that the back can come off the seat easily, so take care when transferring between vehicles.
    • When it comes to care and maintenance, the metal and plastic parts of the Graco Tranzitions can be cleaned with cool water and a mild soap whereas the buckle can be cleaned with a damp cloth. As for harness straps, these are suitable to be spot cleaned.

    Our Verdict & Customer Opinions

When you purchase the Graco Tranzitions 3-in-1 Harness Booster Convertible Car Seat you are getting quality, comfort, safety, and convenience all at a relatively low price! The main flaw was the difficulty some parents experienced during installation with the LATCH system due to the hook-style connectors, so keep this in mind.

    Chicco MyFit Harness

    4.7/5
    4.7/5

The Chicco MyFit Harness + Booster Car Seat is a booster not only focused on your child’s safety, security and protection but also style, convenience, and comfort. As a brand, Chicco has a testing facility named ‘The Happiness Lab’, which works directly with ergonomists, pediatricians, and parents to ensure that they are producing the best child car seats possible.

This booster easily transitions between its harness mode and booster mode. Its harness mode is suitable for children who are at least 2 years old, weighing between 25 and 65 pounds and are 54 inches tall or less.

As for the booster mode, this is suitable for kids who are at least 4 years old, within a 4 to 100-pound weight range and between 38 and 57 inches tall. The Chicco MyFit is available in 3 different colors/styles, with ‘Fathom’, ‘Canyon’ and ‘Gardenia’.

    Happy-baby

    Why We Love It

    • Features dual-density padding and a Deep Ergo Boost contoured seat design to ensure your child is comfortable and supported.
    • Adjustable 9-position headrest for your child’s comfort.
    • Premium LATCH connectors for installation with the LATCH system.
    • Includes RideRight bubble levels to ensure the seat is installed at the correct angle for your child with 4 recline positions available.
    • Convenient design with collapsible dishwasher safe cup holders that are removable via a push-button and machine-washable seat cover.
    • Impressive safety features including Chicco’s Duo Guard side-impact protection for your child’s head and torso as well as a steel-reinforced frame.
    • Extended weight limit of 25 to 100 pounds, providing years of usage.
    • Rated as a ‘Best Bet’ Booster by the IIHS for providing a good belt fit for children.
    • Includes the Lock Sure belt-tightening system for easy and secure installation via the vehicle’s seat belt system.
    • An 8-year expiration date.
    Sad-baby

    Keep In Mind

    • In order to use the booster mode, your child must be at least 4 years old and be able to sit relatively still in a seat belt at all times.
    • There are more leveling angles available in the harness mode compared to the booster mode.
    • At 25 pounds, the Chicco MyFit is definitely not lightweight, which does not make it an ideal booster car seat for families on the go who plan to regularly transfer it between vehicles.
    • It is important to be aware that the LATCH system can only be used up until your child is 40 pounds. After 40 pounds the Chicco MyFit must be installed via the vehicle’s seat belt.
    • This booster does not convert into a backless booster, meaning that you will need to purchase a backless booster if your child exceeds either the weight or height limit of the Chicco MyFit.

    Our Verdict & Customer Opinions

Parents love the Chicco MyFit Harness + Booster Car Seat for its safety, comfort, convenience, and value for money. The two main complaints regarding the Chicco MyFit was the lack of a backless booster and the weight of the booster, meaning it was not easily transferable.

    Graco Affix

    4.6/5
    4.6/5

The Graco Affix Youth Booster Seat with Latch System comes from a reputable brand who has been designing and manufacturing baby products, including car seats, strollers, high chairs, and baby swings since 1955. The Graco Affix reflects this reputation as a booster seat that offers safety, comfort, durability, and value for money.

This booster seat transitions with ease between a high back booster, suitable for kids within 30 to 100-pound weight range and between 38 and 57 inches tall and a backless booster, which is perfect for kids weighing between 40 and 100 pounds and between 43 and 57 inches tall.

The Graco Affix is available in 2 different colors/designs, ‘Atomic’, which is a red and black seat with white trim and ‘Grapeade’, a purple and dark grey seat with white trim also.

    Happy-baby

    Why We Love It

    • Years of usage with a 10-year expiration and 1-year limited manufacturer’s warranty.
    • A number of adjustable features, including a multi-layer, fully-adjustable 6-position headrest for your child’s comfort.
    • Full coverage back support for your growing child.
    • Open-loop belt guides to ensure your vehicle’s seat belt is securely positioned when installing via the vehicle’s seat belt system.
    • Integrated cup holder and hideaway storage compartment for snacks and toys.
    • Rated as a ‘Best Bet’ by the IIHS, meaning it provides a good belt fit for children aged 4 to 8 years old in almost any vehicle.
    • Graco ProtectPlus Engineered.
    • One-hand front-adjust LATCH system to secure the booster to your vehicle’s car seat, preventing it from becoming a projectile object when unoccupied in the event of a collision.
    • At 9.8 pounds, the Graco Affix is one of the lightest booster car seats on the market, making it easily transferable between vehicles.
    Sad-baby

    Keep In Mind

    • The Graco Affix has age requirements for each booster mode. For the high back booster mode, your child should be at least 3 years old whereas for the backless mode they should be at least 4 years old. This means that taller kids may outgrow the Graco Affix booster before they reach the weight limit, sometimes requiring another booster seat.
    • Parents found the LATCH straps difficult to uninstall due to the hook-style connectors, rather than the easier push-on connectors.
    • The integrated cup holder and storage compartment may not be large enough to hold bigger sized drinks, snacks, and toys.
    • The base of the Graco Affix must not overhang the vehicle’s back seat, if you have a vehicle with shallow-depth seats this may be an issue.
    • While it is lightweight, it is a relatively wide and bulky car seat, which means that for many vehicles, particularly small or compact vehicles, the Graco Affix is not ideal for 3-across car seat configurations.

    Our Verdict & Customer Opinions

The Graco Affix Youth Booster Seat with Latch System is a fantastic and affordable ‘Big Kid’ seat that provides you with 10 years of usage. This booster performs well in terms of safety, ease of use, durability, and comfort.

Unfortunately, it does not transition into a backless booster. It is available in 2 different colors/styles, including ‘Glacier’ (black with white trim) and ‘Nyssa’ (grey with pink trim).

    • Easy to remove machine-washable seat cover.
    • Built-in harness storage compartment.
    • 2-position recline.
    Sad-baby

    Keep In Mind

    • While the cupholders are removable for cleaning, please ensure they are reattached before travel as the Graco Atlas has not been safety tested without them.
    • The Graco Atlas does not convert into a backless booster, meaning that if your child exceeds either the weight or height limit of the high back booster mode, a backless booster will be required.
    • Some parents noted that the seat bottom feels less padded than other booster car seats on the market and may result in your child being uncomfortable.
    • Parents also found that the recline was lacking, which meant that depending on your vehicle seat, your child may not be reclined enough to stop their head from slumping forward as they sleep.

    Our Verdict & Customer Opinions

The Graco Atlas 65 2-in-1 Harness Booster Car Seat is a fantastic choice for parents with children who are over 3 years old and weighs between 30-100 pounds and it is loved by both parents and children. However, no booster car seat is perfect so keep in mind the lack of recline options as well as the lack of a backless booster.

    Graco Highback Turbo Booster

    4.5/5
    4.5/5

The Graco Highback Turbo Booster Car Seat is one of the most affordable booster car seats on this list that you will still get years of use with. Its low price also does not compromise the quality and safety provided, with this booster car seat being top-rated by leading consumer magazines and publications.

The high back booster is suitable for children from 30-100 pounds and between 38-57 inches in height whereas the backless booster is for kids weighing 40-100 pounds and between 40 and 57 inches in height. There are 7 color options and styles available to suit your child’s taste!

        • Side impact tested for occupant retention with a standard vehicle harness system in the high back booster mode.
    • At 8.4 pounds, the Graco Highback is one of the most lightweight booster car seats on the market, meaning it is easily transferable between vehicles.
    Sad-baby

    Keep In Mind

    • Some parents found that because the Graco Highback is so lightweight that it was too flimsy and when unoccupied it rattled. We recommend strapping the Graco Highback in with a seatbelt even when not in use to ensure that it does not move around and become a projectile object in the event of a collision.
    • The cup holders may be a bit shallow for taller drinks and cups.
    • There is no LATCH attachment, however, this is common for booster seats that don’t convert into a forward-facing harness car seat.

    Our Verdict & Customer Opinions

Both parents and kids loved the Graco Highback Turbo Booster Car Seat with neither having any major issues with it. Kids especially love the Graco Highback as it is catered to ‘big kids’ from its design to its features, including hideaway cup holders and adjustable head support and armrests. Keep this in mind before converting the Britax Pioneer to its booster mode. As laws tend to differ from state to state, we recommend checking your local state laws regarding car seat usage.
    • The LATCH system has a weight limit where the lower anchors cannot be used with a child weighing more than 45 pounds. Once your child is 45 pounds, install the Britax Pioneer via the vehicle’s seat belt system.

    • Parents found the cupholders difficult to attach and to keep in place.

    Happy-baby

    Why We Love It

    • We love this booster because kids love it and you can’t go wrong with the fun and bright character designs, including choices from Marvel, DC, Disney, and Nickelodeon. • Includes a number of adjustable features to keep your growing child as comfortable as possible with 2 crotch belt positions and 3 headrest positions.
    Sad-baby

    Keep In Mind

    • While kids love the character designs, the protruding plastic heads, wide armrests, and large cup holders make the KidsEmbrace 2-in-1 quite a bulky booster seat, meaning that it is not ideal for 3-across car seat configurations.
    • Parents found that installation via the LATCH system was quite tricky, with the straps being difficult to both attach and tighten. Parents also experienced slight difficulty with installation via the seat belt, particularly routing the seat belt itself.
    • Parents also found that their children were not entirely comfortable in the KidsEmbrace 2-in-1 due to a thin seat cushion and with the character decorations protruding at the top and the sides.

    Our Verdict & Customer Opinions

The main selling point of the KidsEmbrace 2-in-1 Harness Booster Car Seat is its character design, which both kids and parents truly love. However, over time, either when your child grows older or during those long car trips, the novelty does, unfortunately, wear off. In particular, the thin seat cushion can become uncomfortable for children on long road trips so this booster may be best for shorter rides.

However, with its high price, you will need to determine if this innovative booster fits into your personal budget.

FAQs: Here Are Some Questions Parents Have About Booster Car Seats

Once your child outgrows their harnessed car seat, a booster seat is the next step in their car seat journey. We’ve made it easy by compiling and answering frequently asked questions below, which covers all you need to know about booster car seats to help guide you in choosing the best booster car seat for both your child and family.

    1. What is a booster car seat?

A booster car seat is primarily designed to correctly position the vehicle seat belt to safely restrain your child and there are 3 main types of booster seats to consider, including:

      •   Forward Facing to Booster Convertible Seat

This is a popular option amongst families as they convert from a forward-facing seat with a harness to a booster, saving you both time and money in the long-term. Some will also have the ability to convert into a backless booster.

      • High Back or Belt-Positioning Booster Seat

This is a booster car seat that must be used with a lap and shoulder belt. This type of booster is ideal for a vehicle that does not have headrests but can still be used in a vehicle that does have headrests, just keep in mind that the back of the booster must sit evenly against the vehicle car seat.

      • Backless Booster Seat

A backless booster must be used with a lap and shoulder belt and are considered the most convenient as they are normally lightweight, meaning they are easily transferable. However, there are some requirements to be able to use a backless booster seat, including, your car must have headrests and your child’s ears must be no less than one inch below the top of the headrest when they are sitting down in the seat.

    2. When should I switch to a booster car seat?

It is important to follow the recommendations of child car seat safety experts, including the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)’s guidelines:

      • Your child must be at least 4 years old and 40 inches tall to use a booster seat.
      • Your child has outgrown the manufacturer’s recommendations for their existing harnessed car seat.
      • Your child can remain upright and still when sitting in a booster seat with their legs being able to naturally bend over the edge of the booster seat.

However, it is important to keep in mind that depending on your state, there are different age and weight requirements a child has to reach. We recommend checking your local state laws about booster usage to ensure your child is ready to make the switch.

    3. What age is a booster car seat appropriate?

While each state has its own regulations and requirements for an appropriate age for booster car seat usage, the general rule is to wait until your child is at least 4 years old.

We recommend following the recommendations of child car seat safety experts, including the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). The AAP guidelines state that keeping your child in a rear-facing harnessed car seat for as long as possible is the way to go as harnessed car seats offer far more protection than any other child car seat.

    4. What is a ‘Best Bet’ booster?

A ‘Best Bet’ booster is a rating given to booster car seats that provide a good lap and shoulder belt fit for typical 4 to 8-year-olds in almost any car, minivan or SUV. This rating is issued by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), who place booster seats into four categories, including ‘BEST BETs’, ‘GOOD BETs’, ‘Not recommended’, and ‘Check fit’.

Booster car seats solely rely on vehicle safety belts to restrain and protect children so it’s important to check that the booster seat is providing the best belt fit possible.

    5. How and when should I dispose of a booster seat?

Your child’s booster seat should be disposed of once it reaches its expiration date. Keep in mind that some stores like Target will have trade-in days where you can bring your expired car seat to dispose of properly and they tend to give you a discount for your next car seat purchase. Some car seat brands also offer similar trade-in schemes, including Clek’s Product Recycling Program.

Your booster car seat should also be thrown out once its been involved in a crash unless it’s a minor crash. The NHTSA defines a minor crash as a crash that meets ALL of the following criteria:

      • You can drive your vehicle from the crash site.
      • The door closest to the child safety car seat was undamaged.
      • None of the vehicle occupants were injured.
      • The airbags didn’t deploy.
      • No visible damage to the child safety car seat.
      • If something on the car seat breaks, contact the seller for a refund or an exchange.

    6. What is the safest booster car seat?

All child car seats must meet or exceed Federal US and ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) Safety Standards in order to be sold on the market, which means that any booster car seat you purchase will be safe for your child.

However, keep in mind that a car seat is only safe if it is used and installed correctly. We recommend purchasing a booster car seat that is highly rated for its ease of installation and use.

    7. When can I eliminate the booster car seat?

We recommend following the AAP guideline that children should use a booster car seat up until they are at least 4 feet and 9 inches tall. Before saying goodbye to your child’s booster car seat, it’s important to check these five things prior to doing so:

      1. Your child can sit against the vehicle seat with their back sitting completely flat against it without a gap and they should not be slouched forward.
      2. Your child’s knees naturally and comfortably bend over the edge of the vehicle seat. This is to ensure that the seat belt does not rise up onto the soft part of their stomach, which is a significant safety risk.
      3. Your child should be tall enough so that the shoulder vehicle belt sits diagonally across their shoulder, not their neck or arm. This is important as during a collision the belt can slip off the shoulder or injure their neck.
      4. The lap belt sits across the top of your child’s thighs, not their abdomen. This is because the hip bones are the strongest part of someone’s body and during an impact, this is where force should be directed.

Your child is able to remain safely seated throughout the ride.

    8. How do I know if our booster car seat is installed correctly?

There are a few things to look out for, which indicate that your booster car seat is installed correctly, including that you’re able to access the seatbelt easily and buckle it in properly across your child’s body. This can be difficult in smaller or more compact cars and vehicles with bucket seats. Also, make sure the vehicle seat belt slides freely within the seat belt guides.

The position of your child’s booster car seat is also important! Ideally, you want to position the booster seat in the center of the backseat for enhanced side impact protection, however, if you’re unable to do so place the booster behind the passenger side of your vehicle as this will allow you to easily check on your child. Please also ensure that where the booster car seat is placed that there is both a lap and shoulder belt rather than just a lap belt.

    9. What is LATCH?

LATCH stands for Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children. While LATCH systems are far more common with harnessed car seats, some booster car seats do have LATCH systems, which can help to ensure a secure connection to the built-in anchors and tethers in your vehicle.

The LATCH system also helps keep the seat sill and secure, particularly when not in use as it prevents the booster seat from becoming a projectile object in the event of a collision. If your booster car seat does not have a LATCH system, be sure to secure the booster with the vehicle seat belt to keep it secure when unoccupied.

    10. How do I keep my kids from overheating and sweating while riding in their car seat?

There are a few things you can do to reduce the chances of your child overheating and sweating in their car seat, here are our top tips:

      • Choose a booster car seat model that has breathable and ventilated mesh fabric that improves airflow, increases cooling and decreases sweating.
      • Invest in some window sunshades as these definitely make a difference not only to the temperature of your vehicle but also your child’s booster car seat.
      • Dress your child appropriately for warmer months and be careful not to over-dress them as this will contribute to sweating and overheating.
      • Turn your air conditioning on for a few minutes prior to placing your child in their booster seat as this will cool down the interior of your vehicle.
